Sophie Erickson Walter, age 98, of Albert City, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at the Pleasant View Care Center in Albert City.

Sophie was born May 5, 1906, to Wilhelm and Louise (Nordbrook) Ehrich on a farm south of Albert City where she lived with her parents during her early years. She received her education at the country school in rural Albert City. Sophie lived her entire life in Buena Vista County.

Sophie had a lifelong relationship with her church, St. John’s Lutheran, in rural Albert City where she was baptized, confirmed, married, and now from which she will be laid to rest in the church cemetery.

On February 25, 1935, Sophie married Willis Erickson at St. John's with Pastor Carl Wenger officiating. Sophie and Willis welcomed an adopted daughter, Thelma Jane Thomas, from Bettensport, Iowa, on August 3, 1940. Thelma was a half-sister to Willis. Willis passed away May 20, 1975.

On March 3, 1984, Sophie married Ralph Walter of Storm Lake at St. John's. Pastor Victor Wenger, son of Pastor Carl Wenger, officiated at the wedding ceremony. Ralph died May 30, 1985.

A loving wife and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Sophie took great pride in keeping a warm and comfortable home for her family. She also worked as a cook at a café for two years and at the school for ten years. In addition, Sophie enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, playing cards, and animals. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Thelma Jane, and her husband, Freddie Degner, of Albert City; her grandchildren: Cindy Degner O'Neall (Bill), Mike Degner (Mel), Sue Degner Shold (Dan), and Ron Degner (Rhonda); her great-grandchildren: Damon O'Neall, Leigh Degner Schultz (Jason), Misti Degner Grant, Mick Degner (Laura), Kelli Shold Vick (Mike), Josh Shold, Rachel Degner, Shayla Degner, and Shane Degner; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Sophie was preceded in death by her father, Wilhelm Ehrich, on May 12, 1930; her mother, Louise Nordbrook Ehrich, on April 7, 1960; her brother, Walter Ehrich, on May 30, 1954; her sister, Ella Henrichs, on January 18, 1996; her first husband, Willis; and her second husband, Ralph.

Funeral services for Sophie Walter were Friday, February 25, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Albert City with Pastor David Bernhardt officiating. Burial was in St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City.
