Edward "Ed" Groth

Edward "Ed" Groth, age 87, of Newell, Iowa, died February 14, 2012, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell.
Edward K. Groth was born on a farm in Douglas Township, Sac County, Iowa, on December 20, 1924. He attended country school through the 8th grade, entered high school in Fonda, and graduated in 1942. He met the love of his life, Bernice Johnson, his sophomore year and married her in 1944. To this union were born: Dennis, Jim, Joanne, and Gaylen (still born).
Ed and Bernice farmed for twenty-five years before starting an insurance business while continuing to farm. Ed added real estate to the business and retired after thirty-two years. He served as mayor of Newell from 1974 - 1978 and was Director of Buena Vista Mutual for thirty-two years. He also served as a trustee and an elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Fonda where he had attended since his youth. When the church closed in 2007, he became a member of the First Congregation United Church of Christ.
Ed and Bernice loved to dance and followed the Jane Russell Band even as far away as Mesa, Arizona. Ed loved life and his family and enjoyed his many friends. He enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, and was known to tell a few stories in his lifetime. Bernice passed away in June of 2006.
In February of 2007, Ed married Violet Carlson Seagren. They shared three beautiful years together. Violet passed away in February of 2010.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Dennis (Elaine) Groth, of Newell, Iowa, and Joanne (Denny) Christian, of Panora, Iowa; his step-daughters: Linda (Don) Darling, of Winterset, Iowa, and Nancy (Steve) Corkrean, also of Winterset, Iowa; his grandchildren: Gary Groth, Dr. Doug (Dr. Eva) Groth, Jill (Curtis) Cunningham, Dr. Nicolle (Eric) Rubendall, and Mandy (Trevor) Shannon; his step-grandchildren: Jenny (Al) Ortiz, Mat (Beth) Christian, Matthew (Mindy) Darling, Jason (Nicole) Darling, and Jeff Corkrean; his great grandchildren: Mike and Trevor Groth, Morgan and Taryn Groth, Jack and Max Cunningham; his step-great grandchildren: Easton and Avary Darling, Cole Darling, Trystin Cunningham, Alyssa, Al Jr., and Isabella Ortiz, and Madison, Jordan, and KayAnna Christian; his sister, Helen Widman, of Fulda, Minnesota; and his sister-in-law, Florence Groth; as well as many nieces and nephews; extended family and many friends.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Ethyl; his wives, Bernice and Violet; his sons, Jim and Gaylen; his sisters, Matilda and Viola, and one brother, Chris.
Visitation: 5:00-8:00 p.m. February 17, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., February 18, 2012, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell, Iowa.
