Jean Harrington, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died February 9, 2012, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.
Ardis Jean Burger was born October 8, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Dr. August Fredrick II and Mabel Luella (Williams) Burger. She was baptized in Dow City, Iowa, in 1924 and later confirmed at the Presbyterian Church in Alta, Iowa, in 1938.
Growing up, Jean attended grade school in Alta and graduated from Alta High School in 1942. Following high school graduation, she attended Iowa Central Community College where she received her Certified Nurse’s Aide training in 1970.
On September 10, 1947, Jean married Glenn T. Harrington at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. They were blessed with three children: Cynthia, Vincent, and Leigh Ann.
Having become a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Jean also joined the Guild. In addition, she was a member of the Ladies Elks Auxiliary and AMVETS Auxiliary in Storm Lake. A homemaker, she sold Avon Products on the side. Moreover, she worked as a Certified Nurse’s Aide at both the Methodist Manor Retirement Community and the Buena Vista Manor until she retired in 1975.
Jean fondly remembered that she was Miss Alta in 1943. She loved music and enjoyed singing for many years at the Presbyterian Church in Alta. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, needle point, and reading. She loved traveling, especially to Hawaii, Oregon, North Carolina, and Texas where she spent several winters. Jean treasured spending time with her family and friends and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish Jean's her memory include her husband, Glenn T. Harrington, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her children: Cynthia Harrington, of Omaha, Nebraska, Vincent (Pat) Harrington, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Leigh Ann (Gregory) Schriber, also of Storm Lake, Iowa; her grandchildren: Matthew (Nancy) Harrington, of Wheaton, Illinois, and Alexander Schriber, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and her great grandchild, Jackson Harrington, of Wheaton, Illinois; as well as extended family and friends.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. August Fredrick II and Mabel Luella Burger; her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. August “Bud” Fredrick Burger III, and his wife, Claudia; and a grandson, Jeremy Winebrinner.
Visitation: 5:00-8:00 p.m., February 13, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m., February 14, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
