Norm was born July 6, 1921, in Peterson, Iowa, the son of Halver and Nellie Berg. Growing up, he attended school and then graduated from Peterson High School in 1939. Following high school graduation, he attended Bradley University School of Watchmaking.

Norm worked for his brother, Harold, as a watchmaker in Manson, Iowa, until December of 1941. On February 13, 1942, he enlisted into the United States Navy. He was assigned to the United States Navy Amphibious Force and spent two and a half years in the Mediterranean. He took part in the invasion of Sicily, Anzio, and southern France. He was awarded three battle stars for these engagements. Upon his return, he was stationed in New Orleans until the war ended. He was called back to the service during the Korean War, serving sixteen months putting the USS Cascade, a repair ship, back in service in Newport, Rhode Island. He would often mention that not a single Korean got past his post in Rhode Island.

At that time, Norm purchased the store in Storm Lake. Norm retired in 1990 at which time his son, Steve, took over the business.

After the death of his wife, Gloria, in 1994, Norm married Jean Foote in 1995. Jean passed away in 2006.

Norm was on the original Board of Directors and had a part in the founding of the Lake Creek Country Club. In his spare time, he loved all sporting events, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. Norm treasured spending time with his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
