Irene Mikes Jackson, age 95, of Columbia, Missouri, and formerly of Storm Lake and West Bend, Iowa, died on Monday, January 30, 2012, at The Neighborhoods of Tiger Place in Columbia.

Irene Mikes, the daughter of Adolph and Josephine (Cink) Mikes, was born in West Bend, Iowa, on October 6, 1916. She lived her youth and received her education at West Bend, graduating from the West Bend High School. Irene continued her education at the University of Minnesota where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics and Nutrition. She served in the American Red Cross during World War II at Camp Mystic Missouri and Camp Crowder Texas. Following the war, she was a law librarian at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

On September 9, 1946, Irene married Gordon Jackson. This union was blessed with three children: Tom, Jill, and Scott. Irene was a longtime member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church of Storm Lake.

Irene’s life will always be honored and cherished by her children: Tom, and his wife, Kathie, of Columbia, Missouri, Jill Johnson, and her husband, Bill, of Holyoke, Colorado, and Scott, of Lake City, Iowa; her granddaughters: Wendy (Trevor) Hamilton, of Morristown, New Jersey, and Amy (Matt) Symes, of Las Vegas, Nevada; and two great grandchildren, Tristan and Avery Hamilton, of Morristown, New Jersey; as well as other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gordon, in 1961; five brothers: Frank, Leo, Paul, Roman, and Harold Mikes; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial may be made in Irene’s memory to the Iowa Special Olympics, P.O. Box 620, Grimes, IA 50111.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, February 4, 2012, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the West Bend Cemetery in West Bend, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church on Saturday, February 4, 2012. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
