John R. Rasmussen
September 24, 1927 - January 13, 2012

John R. Rasmussen, age 84, of Albert City, Iowa, died January 13, 2012, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City.

John Robert Rasmussen, the son of Elmer and Veronica (McCoy) Rasmussen, was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on September 24, 1927. He attended All Saints and Visitation Grade School before graduating from Dowling High School in Des Moines.

After enlisting in the United States Navy in 1945, John attended Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania where he was training to be a pilot before his honorable discharge in 1946. He returned to Iowa to attend Iowa State University in Ames, graduating in 1950 with a degree in Agronomy.

John married Helen Miller on July 1, 1950. They were blessed with six children.

John and Helen moved to Albert City where he worked as a Veteran’s Instructor from 1950 to 1960 teaching farming techniques to returning Korean War veterans among others. John then started the Farm Automation Company in Albert City and Sioux Rapids, selling feed automated equipment.

A long time parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina and Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Laurens, Iowa, John served many years with the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed gardening and took up beekeeping the last several years, supplying honey to local residents. John loved just sitting in a lawn chair in the front yard, waving hello to friends and strangers alike that passed by, and enjoying anyone who stopped to visit.

John is survived by his loving wife of sixty-one years, Helen W., of Albert City, Iowa, as well as their six children and their spouses: Stephen (Sidney) Rasmussen, of Lilburn, Georgia, Teresa (Roger) Pierce, of Burlington, Iowa, David (Revellia) Rasmussen, of Olathe, Kansas, Mary (Bruce) Case, of Monument, Colorado, Monica (Jerry) Stone, of Springfield, Illinois, and Mark (Michele) Rasmussen, of Lilburn, Georgia; along with his sixteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard “Dick” Rasmussen, of Chamblee, Georgia; two sisters: Mary-Ann Wahl, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Virginia Barton, of Orlando, Florida; as well as other extended family and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Veronica and Elmer Rasmussen; and his brother, Father James Rasmussen.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina, Iowa. Burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City at a later date. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Monday, January 16, 2012, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The parish rosary will be recited at 4:40 p.m., at the funeral home. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
