Loreen M. Carpenter, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died December 30, 2011, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Loreen May Rice was born on November 1, 1919, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond and Vida (Thompson) Rice. In 1920, she was baptized at the Methodist Church.

Growing up, Loreen attended grade school and high school in Cherokee, Iowa, graduating from Wilson High School. Following high school, she earned her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teacher’s College.

On June 1, 1940, Loreen married Garlan Carpenter at the Methodist Parsonage in Cherokee, Iowa. They were blessed with four children: Karen, Gayle, George, and Audrey.

Loreen was a member of the ARC in Buena Vista County and the Community Chest Board. She was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Moreover, she was instrumental in starting the Red Barn, now Genesis Development.

Loreen enjoyed traveling to numerous places in the United States with her husband, Garlan, in their 5th wheel camper. She loved teaching Bible School and Sunday School. In her spare time, she treasured quilting. Loreen loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Karen (Edward) Verdelotti, of Vinton, Virginia, Gayle (Paul) Kennedy, of Parker, Colorado, and Audrey (Charles) Olson, of London, Arkansas; her grandchildren: Christine Verdelotti, Michael Kennedy, Robert (Alli) Kennedy, Laura (Joe) Webb, and Jonathan Olson; her great grandchildren: Henry and Owen Kennedy, Landon Staub, and Mia, Aubree, and Karter Webb; her brothers: Glen Rice, of Ostrander, Minnesota, and Virgil (Betty) Rice, of Sioux City, Iowa; her sisters: Ellen Rice, of Cherokee, Iowa, and Veda Rice, of Fairfield, California; as well as extended family and friends.

Loreen was preceded in death by her husband, Garlan Carpenter; her parents, Raymond and Vida Rice; her son, George Carpenter; her brother, Evron Rice; and her sister, Doris Campbell.

Visitation: 3:00-6:00 p.m., January 03, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., January 04, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa,

Interment: January 04, 2012, at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa.
