Verna Atkins Loving
February 25, 1925 - December 20, 2011Verna Atkins Loving, age 86, of Albert City, Iowa, and formerly of Pomeroy, Iowa, died December 20, 2011, at the Spencer Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.
Verna Mabel Erickson, the daughter of Severius and Mabel (Johnson) Erickson, was born in Pomeroy on February 25, 1925. She lived her youth in rural Pomeroy and graduated from Pomeroy High School. Verna continued her education at the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught at the Bellville Township Country School and later at the Pomeroy Community School.
On August 21, 1954, Verna married Marion Atkins at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Pomeroy. They were blessed with four children: Mavis, Janice, Joleen, and Barry. A devoted and loving wife and mother, Verna enjoyed baking and cooking with her sister, Ruth, at the Twin Lakes Bible Camp for many years. Following Marion’s death in 1980, Verna returned to education and served in the library at the Pomeroy Community School for thirteen years. In 1999, she came to make her home in Albert City. On November 29, 2003, she married Elwood Loving at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City.
Verna was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Pomeroy and a member of the Covenant Women. She had also belonged to the S.A.K. Study Club and the Am Vets Auxiliary in Pomeroy as well as the “Just A Club” in Albert City. In recent years, she enjoyed serving as a volunteer at the hospital in Storm Lake. Verna had a sincere love for music which blossomed when she sang with a gospel quartet. She also had a gift for playing the piano by ear. Moreover, she passed her love of music along to her children and grandchildren.
Verna’s family will always cherish and celebrate life. They include her husband, Elwood, of Albert City, Iowa; her children: Mavis (Robert) Loving, of Albert City, Iowa, Jan (Jim) Quarnstrom, of Ames, Iowa, Joleen (Robert) Johnson, of Albert City, Iowa, and Barry (Katie) Atkins, of Lombard, Illinois; her grandchildren: Kelly (Andy) Wilson, Bailey and Jamie Quarnstrom, Kari, Karmen, and Laurie Loving, Zoe and Liam Atkins, and Luke Johnson; one great grandson, Rory Wilson; a sister, Ruth Lantz, of Pomeroy, Iowa; three brothers: Merlin (Nadine) Erickson and Rubert (Doris) Erickson, of Pomeroy; and Eldon (Zoanne) Erickson, of Ames, Iowa; her nieces and nephews: Rachael Poling, Renee Olson, Eric Lantz, Marjean Seehusen, Scott Erickson, Lisa Aljets, Dean Erickson, and Brad Erickson; along with their families and other extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marion, on September 22, 1980; her twin brother, Vernon Erickson; her brother-in-law, Harold Lantz; and a nephew, Bruce Lantz.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 23, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Pomeroy, Iowa. Visitation will take place Thursday, December 22, 2011, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City with the family present the entire time. Burial will be in the Evangelical Covenant Church Cemetery in Pomeroy. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
