Mary A. Schmitt, age 58, of Early, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 21, 2011, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Mary Ann Demers was born August 1, 1953, in Corona, California, the daughter of Robert and Marilyn (Berry) Demers. Growing up, she attended St. Mary’s Catholic school, graduating from St. Mary’s High School in 1971. Following high school graduation, she attended Iowa Lakes Community College for two years.

On February 2, 1974, Mary married Lenard Schmitt at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. This union was blessed with four children: Lori, Stacey, Renae, and Shawn.

Mary was baptized in Santa Ana, California, and confirmed into the Catholic faith at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. A current member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, she also served on the Sacred Heart Guild.

Over the years, Mary was actively involved in various groups including: the Women’s Club, the Early Card Club, and the Bosom Buddies. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, shopping, and decorating, especially at Christmas time. Her most special moments were those she shared with her grandchildren. Mary will be forever remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of thirty-eight years, Lenard Schmitt, of Early; her children: Lori (Jason) Donelson, of Early, Stacey (Michael) DeBoer, of Jefferson, South Dakota, Renae (Barry) Binder, of Alta, Iowa, and Shawn Schmitt, of Early; nine grandchildren: Tonia and Caleb Anway, Seth Donelson, and Ethan, Levi, Chase, Joslyn, Kolton, and Olivia DeBoer; her mother, Marilyn Demers, of Storm Lake; her brothers, Steve Demers, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Ron (Katie) Demers, of Sioux City, Iowa; her sisters: Sue (Marion) Gibbins, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Carol Demers, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Joanne (Robert) Sippel, of Lombard, Illinois; her brothers- and sisters-in-law: David Leonard, Helen (Don) Henrich, Ed (Sandy) Schmitt, Catherine Schmitt-Christman, Shirley Schmitt, Sue Schmitt, Frances (Butch) Blum, and George (Sandy) Schmitt; and many nieces and nephews; as well as extended family and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her father, Robert “Bob” Demers; her sister, Dianne Leonard; her parents-in-law, John and Bertha Schmitt; her brothers-in-law, Lawrence Schmitt and Bill Christman.

Visitation: 3:00-8:00 p.m., December 23, 2011, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., December 24, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, Iowa.
Vigil Service: 7:00 p.m., December 23, 2011, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Interment: December 24, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Early, Iowa.
