Opal K. Hinkeldey
September 12, 1910 - October 23, 2011Opal K Hinkeldey, age 101, of Alta, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2011, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community of Storm Lake.
Opal Katherine Fahr Hinkeldey, daughter of Johann and Anna (Otto) Fahr, was born on September 12, 1910, in Hanover. She was baptized into the Christian faith on September 25, 1910, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Hanover, and confirmed on September 16, 1923, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Galva.
As a young girl, Opal had many "homes" and attended several schools and churches around Hanover, Galva, and Holstein. When she was eight years old, her father died of Influenza on Thanksgiving Day and her mother died of pneumonia and other health related problems six weeks later. Her uncle and aunt, John and Catharine Otto, took her into their home and raised her and loved her as their own. Opal's brothers and sisters were similarly "taken in" by relatives in the area and the siblings remained close. After Opal completed the 8th grade and was confirmed, she began making her own living as a housekeeper and nursemaid.
On February 11, 1932, Opal married Herman Hinkeldey at St. John's Lutheran Church in Galva. The couple established their home and farm in the Hanover area and were faithful members of St. John's Lutheran Church, Hanover. After losing their first son at birth, they were blessed with two healthy sons, Dwaine and Darrel. In 1970, Herman and Opal moved to Alta. After Herman's death in 1977, Opal continued to live independently until the age of 93 when she moved to Wel-Life in Alta and later to the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.
Opal loved fishing, gardening, baking, and quilting. She enjoyed the fellowship of the quilting group at St. John's and found great joy in making quilts for World Relief. She was a devoted and loving grandmother and great-grandmother, always ready with a book to read, a game to play, and a snack before the end of a visit.
After one hundred one faithful years, Opal went home to her Lord Jesus in heaven on October 23, 2011. She was welcomed into the Kingdom by her parents, John and Anna; her husband, Herman; Herman's parents, Herman and Sophia Hinkeldey; an infant son; her son, Dwaine; her great-grandson, Ben; her siblings, Edgar and Alice Fahr, Floyd and Martha Fahr, Leona and Edward Hinkeldey, Everett and Helen Fahr, Glenn Fahr, Albert and Lillie Hinkeldey, Martin and Evelyn Hinkeldey, Oswald and Anna Nielsen, and Eitel Mohn; her uncle and aunt, John and Catharine Otto; her cousins, Ervin and Dora Otto, Mabel and Art Friedrich, and Ralph and Lillian Otto; a niece, Barb Nielsen; and many more cherished family members and friends.
She is survived by her son, Darrel Hinkeldey, and his wife, Bonnie; her daughter-in-law, Dorothy Hinkeldey; her grandchildren, Jim and Deb Hinkeldey (Alta), Myron and Trudy Hinkeldey (Alta), Anita and Marty McVey (Waukee), Dennis Hinkeldey (Safford, Arizona), and Deanna and Scot Dicks (Newell); her great-grandchildren, Nathan and Kate, Thomas and Steffany, Jordan, Russell, Alan, Holly, Nicholas, Marcus, Scott, Caitlin, Taya, Samantha, Seth, and Bryan; her great-great-grandchildren, Mason and Braelyn; her sister-in-law, Frieda Mohn; her cousins, Larry and Janis Otto; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
Opal Fahr Hinkeldey will always be remembered for her love of God and family and for her exceptional kindness and grace.
