October 9, 1919 - October 23, 2011Joyce I. Peterson, age 92, of Alta, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2011, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community of Storm Lake.
Joyce Irene Bengtson, daughter of Nels and Millie (Thor) Bengtson was born October 9, 1919, on the family farm north of Alta. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church near the farm and graduated from Highview School in 1937. After high school, she attended Buena Vista College and Augustana College before graduating from Coe College. She taught school for three years in Manning. Later, she tutored many children in Storm Lake and enjoyed the "one on one" teaching experience.
Joyce married Virgil Johnson on September 28, 1947. To this union, two children were born, Betty Ann and Edward. Virgil passed away while in the service in May, 1958. Subsequently, she married Stanley Peterson on December 25, 1971, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.
Her specialty was making Swedish Rye Bread, baking cookies, and entertaining. She treasured her family and the time she spent with them. Joyce was a member of PEO for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Virgil; her brother, Wesley Bengtson; and three sisters, Maryon Nelson, Virginia Patton, and Marie Sweet.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Stanley Peterson, of Alta; two children, Betty Ann Buffington, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Edward Johnson, of St. Paul, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Joshua (Tina) Buffington, of Des Moines, Jeffrey (Elizabeth) Buffington, of Faribault, Minnesota, Sarah (Jason) Jaworski, of St. Paul, Minnesota, Rachel Johnson, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Todd Johnson, of St. Paul, Minnesota; and two great-grandchildren, William and Jillian Buffington; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Alta with the Rev. D. Duane Olson officiating. Burial was at the Woodlawn Cemetery of Alta. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta was in charge of the arrangements.
