Axel Klein
(August 5, 1851 - August 19, 1919)

Old Resident Called Home

Axel M. Kline Died at His Home in Alta on Aug. 19, [1919], after a long illness with Anemia.

Axel Mauriss (Mauritz) Kline was born in Nasum, Christenstad, Sweden, Aug. 5, 1851. In 1869 he emigrated to the United States and lived successfully in New York, Minnesota, and Illinois. In 1874 he came to Iowa and located about 3 miles northwest of Alta and resided on the same farm until about 4 years ago, when he moved to Alta and has since lived in the south part of town.

He was united in marriage with Mrs. Hannah Benson (Johanna Bengtsdotter) on June 22, 1887. Ten children were born to this union, Arthur D., Alice L., Oscar M., Ida J., Berger R., Anna E., Ernest V., Clarence R., Esther V., and William E., all of whom survive their father except William who died in infancy in 1904. Mrs. Kline, one brother, John A., of Saskatchawan, Canada, and one sister, Mrs. Josephine Hestead of Alta are also left to mourn his departure.

Mr. Kline was greatly esteemed by neighbors and friends for his sterling character and cordial disposition. He was a man who made much of his religion and was a man of unusual faith in God. His great weakness during the latter weeks of his life loosened his affection for earthly things and he expressed a strong desire to be released from sickness and pain and go to his heavenly father.

Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church on Friday by Rev. E. L. Pearson who delivered the sermon in Swede, assisted by Rev. W. C. Rowland who offered words of consolation and appreciation of Mr. Kline's life and character in the English.

His body was born to its final resting place by his five sons and a son-in-law, John Hanan of Storm Lake. The body was interred in Scandinavian cemetary north of town.

The church was beautifully decorated with floral offerings in set pieces provided by the family and others.
