Ed Peterson
March 12, 1940 - August 19, 2011

Ed Peterson, age 71, passed away Friday, August 19, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City surrounded by his family after a brief, but intense illness.

Edwin Leroy Peterson was born March 12, 1940, to Harvey and Evelyn (Specketer) Peterson in Alta. Baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and later confirmed there on April 11, 1954, he would spend his entire life in Alta. He also attended school at Alta where he loved playing football.

On August 9, 1968, he married Peg Kleespies in Storm Lake. A few years later, their daughter, Donna, was born. In 1991, he moved to town where he spent his remaining years with his companion, Velita Cox.

Ed worked at Hy Grade for some time and did some open road trucking, but he spent much of his time hauling feed for Columbian Feed. He also plowed roads for the Iowa Department of Transportation for a short time and most recently enjoyed "working" with the crew at Buzz's Salvage.

He found the most joy in life, however, outside enjoying nature. Indeed, he took special pleasure from his time in Alaska with his family. He loved fishing and hunting. He spent countless hours in his garden in the summer, in between camping trips that is, and camping for him was all about fishing! And from his secret routes, he enjoyed providing asparagus to everyone who wanted some. A very good cook, he especially liked sharing his all day soups, which he made in large quantities, with his family and friends. And at the end of day, or sometimes in the middle of the day, he also enjoyed a few cold beers among friends in the local pub!

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Janet Nielsen.

He is survived by his daughter, Donna, and son-in-law, Jer Warrington, of Estherville; his girlfriend, Velita Cox, of Alta; his step-daughter, Heidi (Charlie) Small, of Albert City; his grandchildren, Mason Warrington, of Estherville, and Glenn, Greta, Graham, and Grace Small, of Albert City; his sister, Karen (Lyle) Morenz, of Storm Lake; his nephew, Brent (Andrea) Morenz, of Plankinton, South Dakota, and their children, Taylor, Kyle and Victoria; and his niece, Amy (Broc) Auen, and their children, Jace and Brenen, of Newton, Iowa. Also his favorite cats, Lucy and Zoey, and life long friends, Bob and Cory Reed, of Texas, survive him.

As we say goodbye to Ed, we recognize that he didn't care much for funerals, so there will be no service to mourn his passing. His family and friends are celebrating his life and smiling. Ed wanted it that way, and yes, he's smiling, too!
