Ellen M. (Carney) Chalmers, age 95, of St. Louis, Missouri, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died August 30, 2011, at the Manor Grove Nursing Home in St. Louis, Missouri.

Ellen M. Carney was born on April 15, 1916, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Fitzpatrick) Carney. Growing up, Ellen attended and subsequently graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in 1932.

Following high school graduation, Ellen went to secretarial school in Sioux City and then worked for the Federal Government in Omaha, Nebraska, before accepting a position with the Department of the Army in Washington, D.C.

While working at the Pentagon, she met her future husband, James A. Chalmers. They married on September 11, 1948, in Washington, D.C., and made their home in Arlington, Virginia, where they raised their family. James died in 1998. In 2002, Ellen moved to the St. Louis, Missouri, area to be near her daughter, Mary.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: John E. Chalmers, of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Mary L. (Nathan) Huebner, of St. Louis, Missouri, Susan E. Chalmers, of Washington, D.C., and a stepchild, Helen (Doug) Riner, of Gordonville, Virginia; ten grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren; as well as extended family and friends.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, Edward, in 1932 and Mary in 1974; her husband, James A. Chalmers; her stepsons: James A. Chalmers, Jr., and George K. Chalmers; her brothers: Thomas and Edward Carney.

Visitation: 9:00 a.m., September 03, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m., September 03, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Interment: September 03, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
