Margaret Judith (Katter) Nelson, age 95, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Monday, August 22, 2011, at the Pleasant View Home at Albert City.

Margaret Judith Katter was born on October 9, 1915, at Garner, Iowa, to Alvin and Fern (Peck) Katter. She received her education at Garner and graduated from Garner High School. She continued her education at the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she earned a teaching certificate.

Judy was on her way to a teaching interview for a country school west of Albert City when she and her mother stopped in Albert City. She was interviewed by the Albert City school system and offered a teaching position there in 1935. In 1937, Judy married Earl B. Nelson at the end of the school year. They resided in Albert City until 1977 when they retired to Green Valley, Arizona. Judy returned to make her home in Albert City in 1984 following Earl’s death in 1980.

She enjoyed her activities at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City, participating in the church choir, Bible studies, and circle meetings. Judy also enjoyed writing in her daily journal, singing all kinds of music, birding, and hiking. The squirrels' antics in her backyard always delighted and amused her while she lived in her home.

Judy is lovingly remembered by her family which includes her daughters: Sigrid, and her husband, Phil Compton, of Katy, Texas, and Judith, and her husband, Fred Dippold, of Portland, Oregon; her grandchildren: Douglas (Caryl) Compton, Pauline (Robert) Hayden, and Curtis (Cindy) Compton; her great grandchildren: Ciara, Mallory, Philip, and Patrick Compton as well as Megan, Nicole and Olivia Hayden, all of whom reside in Texas. Numerous nieces, nephews, and many loving friends also survive her.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Judy’s honor may be given to the Albert City Historical Society, the Albert City Library, or Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

The family will have a memorial service in June, 2012, for Judy in Albert City.
