Greg Barnett
March 7, 1948 - June 18, 2011Greg Linn Barnett, 63, of Atlantic, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2011, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn.
Gregor Linn Barnett was born March 7, 1948, in Atlantic, the son of Charles W. and Grace M. (Anderson) Barnett. He was raised in Atlantic and graduated from Atlantic High School with the class of 1966. He played high school football, becoming an outstanding football player for the Atlantic Trojans.
Greg was in the United States Army and served in Viet Nam from August 1968 to July 1969. During his time in Viet Nam, he was injured and received two Purple Hearts and a Combat Infantry Badge.
After returning from Viet Nam, he attended Buena Vista University in Storm Lake until becoming owner of Mid States Petroleum Engineering.
In 1968, he married Karen Ross. To this union two sons were born, Brian and Andy. This marriage came to a close, and he later was married for a short time to Connie Britt.
Greg was a member of the Optimists Club and the Elks Club. In his youth, he was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic. In Storm Lake, he played on the Albrotose Rugby Team. A major Iowa Hawkeye fan, Greg also enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, and boating.
Later in his life, as his health began to decline, he returned to the Atlantic area where he was loved and cared for by his sister, Sharon.
Those preceding Greg in death are his parents, Charles and Grace Barnett; his sister, Patricia Barnett; and his brothers, Charles (Billy) Barnett, Jr., and Jerry Barnett.
Surviving Greg are his son, Brian (Stacy) Barnett, their daughter, Tera (Bryan) Miller, and Tera's son, Blake, all of Joplin, Missouri, and his other son, Andy (Ange) Barnett, and their son, Seth, all of Iowa City; his sister, Sharon (Wilbur) Hansen of Atlantic; his brothers, Gene (Patty) Barnett, of Storm Lake, Richard (Jess) Barnett, of Wall Lake, and Robert Barnett, of Des Moines; his former wife, Karen (Brent) Page, of Strom Lake; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation with family present will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2011, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, followed by the interment of ashes in Southlawn Cemetery, Atlantic. A luncheon at Hockenberry's will follow the interment. A wake will be held after the lunch, location to be announced during lunch.
