November 11, 1927 - June 13, 2011

Leslie James Oatman, age 83, of Alta, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2011, at the Methodist Manor of Storm Lake.

Leslie Oatman was born November 11, 1927, in Storm Lake to William B. and Essel E. (Cannon) Oatman. He was raised in the Storm Lake area and graduated from Storm Lake High School. He served his country in the United States Army.

On July 2, 1966, he married Sandra Kay Sullivan. Les farmed in the Alta and Storm Lake areas and was also employed as a policeman in Alta. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt and fish.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Oatman, of Alta; his four sons, Wilbur Oatman, of Alta, Tom Oatman, of Alta, Mike Oatman, of Baton Rouge, Lousiana, and Jim Oatman, of South Dakota; his two daughters: Marlene (Randy) Mason, of Ft. Dodge, and Betty Nieland, of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Alta with the Rev. Craig Lee officiating. Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery of Alta with Military Rites by the Alta VFW Post #6172. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday, June 18, 2011, from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Alta. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta is in charge of the arrangements.
