July 07, 1950 - June 07, 2011Barry Thongvanh, age 60, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011, in Storm Lake.
Barry K. Thongvanh was born July 7, 1950, in Son La, North Vietnam, the son of Sam and Choy (Quang-Thi) Thongvanh. Growing up, Barry attended school and later graduated from Dong Dok University in Laos in 1971.
In 1972, Barry married Bouan Baccam in Vientiane, Laos. They were blessed with four children: Mana, Vixa, Danny, and Richey.
On December 17, 1978, Barry was baptized at and united with the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake where he served as a Church Elder. Barry was a founding member of the Central Asian Pacific Islander Commission (CAPI) and was the Commissioned Lay Pastor of the Prospect Hill Presbytery. He also was the Commissioned Lay Pastor of the Southeast Asian Christian Church. Barry graduated from the Austin Theological Seminary School and served with the Southeast Asian Ministry Conference as the Board Secretary. Barry was employed by the Prospect Hill Presbytery and Tyson Foods where he worked as the Chaplain and made several lifelong friendships.
Barry loved traveling, gardening, and serving the Lord. He enjoyed helping and volunteering for those who needed his assistance. He treasured his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Barry will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of thirty-eight years, Bouan Thongvanh, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Mana (Manilay) Thongvanh, of Des Moines, Iowa, Vixa (Kerri) Thongvanh, of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Danny (Melissa) Thongvanh, of Spencer, Iowa, and Richey (Mardi) Thongvanh, of Des Moines, Iowa; his grandchildren: Brady, Belle, Isaac, Lillian, Maddison, and Austin Thongvanh; his parents, Sam and Choy Thongvanh; his brothers: Khamfeung Thongvanh, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Khamsouk (Khai) Thongvanh, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his sisters: Houng (Khamlo) Khounlo, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Viengkeo (Bounrong) Synarong, also of Storm Lake, Iowa, Khamphiou Lonleauglith, of Ontario, Canada, Khamfong (Curtis) Kemp, of Bloomington, Minnesota, Khamla Baccam, of Spencer, Iowa, as well as many nieces and nephews, extended family, and many friends.
Barry was preceded in death by his brother, Khamkeung Thongvanh, and his niece, Keo Gail Khounlo.
Visitation: 5:00-8:00 p.m., June 09, 2011, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Storm Lake, Iowa.
