Roy Clough, age 88, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, June 5, 2011, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Roy W. Clough, son of Clarence and Ethel (Tarr) Clough, was born June 21, 1922, in Boone, Iowa. His family moved to Storm Lake from Boone in 1930 where his parents established Clough Auto Parts. An All-Conference and All-State tackle on the Storm Lake Tornadoes football team and an outstanding basketball player, Roy graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1941.

In college at the University of Iowa when the war started, Roy enlisted in the United States Army in 1942. Stationed in Hawaii and Iwo Jima, he served as a Master Sergeant in the US Army Searchlight Battalion. Honorably discharged on December 24, 1945, Roy enrolled at USC where he studied accounting. In 1947, he returned to Storm Lake becoming a partner in the family business, Clough Auto Parts.

Roy married Marjorie Kaufman at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake on May 1, 1949. They were blessed with three wonderful children: Candy, Kelly, and Kerry. Roy always put his family first.

Roy was active in all areas of community life. A sixty-three year member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge, he also served as a board member at the Lake Creek Country Club and as the President of Faith, Hope and Charity as well as of the PTA. He was a Deacon at the Alta Church of Christ and belonged to the Alta VFW. A 32nd degree Mason, he was also a member of the Zoning Board, Abu Bekr Shrine, Kiwanis, Score, Pride, Santa’s Castle, and the SLPD. Roy was a Scout Leader, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and a Little League Coach.

His extensive hobbies included: stained glass windows, building oak furniture, gardening, working cross-stitch, fishing, and charity work. He and Marj were the planners and builders of Main Street Park downtown, which was constructed in memory of their daughter, Kerry Jan, and as a tribute to his parents. Roy and Marj built three homes in Storm Lake and finished them all using tools from his workshop. Roy also crafted custom oak furniture for all his children’s and grandchildren’s homes, his church, Faith, Hope and Charity, and Santa’s Castle. After retiring, Roy and Marj spent twelve winters in Arizona and continued to love dancing.

Those Roy leaves to mourn his loss include his wife, Marjorie; his daughter, Candy Clough, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his son, Kelly (Connie) Clough, of Ankeny, Iowa; his grandchildren: Joel and Kate Fitzpatrick, Christian Clough, and Cole Petersen; and his great-grandchild, Piper Fitzpatrick; as well as eleven nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends.
