Eldo Bartels, age 82, of Storm Lake, died Friday, October 15, 2004, at the Buena Vista Manor Care Center in Storm Lake.

Eldo Ernst Bartels was born June 15, 1922, the son of Herman W. and S. Maria (Schweer) Bartels on their farm at Tobias, Nebraska. While living on the farm with his parents, he attended Zion Lutheran Parochial School at Tobias, Nebraska.

Eldo was baptized on July 9, 1922, and confirmed that baptism on April 5, 1936, at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Tobias, Nebraska.

He worked on various farms in Nebraska and Iowa until he entered the U.S. Army in March of 1945. He served his country during World War II as a staff sargeant in the Army Air Corps with overseas duty in Greenland. In December of 1946, he received an honorable discharge.

On October 12, 1947, Eldo married Neoma B. Gerke at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. Their marriage was blessed with one son, Daniel Lee.

After their marriage, they moved into Storm Lake and became members of St. John's Lutheran Church. In 1951, to help establish a new congregation in Storm Lake, they became charter members of Grace Lutheran Church. During his membership at Grace, Eldo became a charter member of the Men's Club, the Adult Choir, and the Voters' Assembly in which he served in various offices.

Eldo worked at Schuelke Auto and Implement Company as well as at James Larsen Implement Company. In addition, he served in the United States Postal Service for thirty years before retiring in October of 1983.

Eldo was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Gertrude, and his beloved sister, Mildred.

Survivors include his wife, Neoma Bartels, of Storm Lake; his son, Daniel Bartels, and his wife, Desiree, of Scottsdale, Arizona; his brother, Victor Bartels, and his wife, Tillie, of Storm Lake; his brothers- and sisters-in-law: Loraine and Darvin Harth, of Alta, and Lorna and Willis Lussman, of Storm Lake; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Funeral services for Eldo Bartels were held Monday, October 18, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake under the direction of the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Reverend Steven Schulz officiated.
