March 8, 1921 - September 7, 2004Eleanor C. Shold, age 83, of Albert City, died Tuesday, September 7, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City after suffering several complications following knee replacement surgery in August.
The oldest of five children, Eleanor Carolyn Ekstrand was born March 8, 1921, to Carl and Ellen Ekstrand of rural Pocahontas. She was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Pomeroy. After attending country school through the eighth grade, she enrolled at Pocahontas High School, graduating with the Class of 1938. While attending AIB in Des Moines, she completed a course in bookkeeping.
She returned to Pocahontas and worked at the REC and Commercial State Bank until her marriage to G. Avery Shold on August 17, 1946. They had two children, John and Deborah.
Eleanor and Avery farmed in rural Pocahontas, Webb, near Pickeral Lake, and rural Albert City. She worked as a cook for the ACT school system in the early '70s. After her husband died in 1993, Eleanor remained on the farm until the spring of 2004 when she moved to the Countryside Living Apartments in Albert City, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Eleanor was a life-long member of the Evangelical Covenant Churches of Pomeroy and Albert City, serving on many committees, teaching Sunday School, and holding offices of leadership. She was also a member of many clubs: the Friendly Circle, the HOA, the Golden Rule, the Historical Society, and the Thresherman's & Collector's Association. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, cross-stitch, reading, and crossword puzzles. In addition, she loved to entertain family and friends.
Eleanor will be remembered for her cheerful smile, optimism, quick wit, and her ability to embrace life with enthusiasm.
She is survived by her children: John, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Deborah, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; her granddaughter, Stacy, and her husband, Dustin Maymon; her grandson, Tyler Shold; and several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers: Wilbur, and his wife, Marian Ekstrand, of Pocahontas and Fred and Phyllis Ekstrand, of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; her brothers-in-law: Ted Omtvedt, of Pawnee, Oklahoma, and Clifford Shold, of Albert City; her sisters-in-law: Maxine, and her husband, James Nelson, of Webster City, Iowa, and Roselyn Holmberg, of Spencer; and many nieces and nephews; as well as other extended family and a host of friends.
Preceding Eleanor in death were her husband, Avery, their parents; her sisters: Loraine Sundberg and Harriet Omtvedt; her sister-in-law, Nell Mae Shold; her brothers-in-law: Jim Sundberg and Ned Holmberg.
Funeral services for Eleanor Shold were held Saturday, September 11, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City with Pastor Gavin Ellis officiating. Burial was in the Fairfield Township Cemetery at Albert City. Arrangements were under the direction of the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City.
