Bernice Fairchild, age 99, of Sioux Rapids, died Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids.

Bernice Noble was born February 22, 1905, at Milford, Iowa, to Chris and Edith (Lanyon) Noble. She was baptized in Milford before the family moved. She spent her early years in her parents' home in Pipestone, Minnesota, where she attended grade school, was confirmed in her church, and then graduated from high school.

On December 23, 1925, Bernice married Guy Edgar Fairchild in Pipestone. Their marriage was blessed with five children: Edgar, Donna, Jim, Gordon and Shirley. Bernice was a loving wife, devoted mother and treasured grandmother who made a comfortable home where friends and family alike received a warm welcome, although she especially delighted in her grandchildren.

A faithful member of the Methodist Church, Bernice held various church offices, taught Sunday School, and belonged to the Women's Society. Active in her community, Bernice was a member of the Eastern Star, the Women's Study Club, and the Lee Community Club as well as a leader in 4-H activities. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed playing cards and traveling. Following her husband's death, she spent many years as a nanny in California.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons: Edgar, and his wife, Annette Fairchild, of Spirit Lake, Jim, and his wife, Roberta Fairchild, of Spencer, Gordon, and his wife, Margaret Fairchild, of Sacramento, California; her daughters: Donna, and husband, Max Fuller, of Longmont, Colorado, and Shirley, and her husband, John Pritchard, of Sioux Rapids; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Noble; and one brother-in-law, Jared, and his wife, Marge Fairchild; as well as other relatives and friends.

Preceding Bernice in death were her parents; her husband; four brothers: Elwood, Jim, Cecil and David; and two sisters: Helen and Anne.

Funeral Services for Bernice were held Monday, August 9, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the First United Church of Sioux Rapids with Lay Minister Dean Maiden officiating.
