September 28, 1921 - September 23, 204Esther Lucille Kessler, 82, of Galva, passed away at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake on Thursday morning, September 23, 2003.
Esther Lucille Young was born at the family farm 2 1/2 miles northeast of Galva on September 28, 1921, to Robert Henry and Mary Evaline Bennett Young. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church in Galva where she remained a faithful member until the time of her death. She attended schools in Galva and graduated in 1940 from Galva High School.
August 31, 1941, Esther married Hubert Kessler at the First Methodist Church in Omaha, Nebraska. To this union, six children were born: Dennis, Janice, Joan, Marlene, Roger and Gary.
Esther and Hubert farmed in the Galva area until retiring and moving to their new house in Galva in October of 1982. During the early years, they were busy raising their family. Later, Esther worked at the Lee Store in Storm Lake and the Lamm Insurance Company in Galva. She also sold Avon before retiring in 1983.
Active in her church, Esther taught Sunday School for several years. She belonged to card clubs and other organizations. She was a volunteer at the Coffee Shop at the hospital in Storm Lake. She loved to make quilts, crochet, and play cards. She made quilts and afghans for all of the family members and a baby quilt for all the new babies arriving in the family. Esther was known as the "pie lady" of Galva and will be remembered as "Esther Bunny" at all of her Easter gatherings. Her greatest joy was having her family come to visit.
Left to cherish her memories are her husband, Hubert; six children, Dennis (Diana) Kessler, of Storm Lake, Janice (Robert) Railsback, of Storm Lake; Joan (Thomas) Osborn, of Kansas City, Missouri, Marlene (Robert) Shottenkirk, of Portland, Oregon; Roger (Sharrel) Kessler, of Des Moines, and Gary (Linda) Kessler, of Storm Lake; seventeen grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, James (Carolyn) Young of Galva; a sister-in-law, Birdella (Bob) Brostad, of Galva; and a host of extended family members as well as a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Mary Young; her brother, Raymond Young; her sister, Mabel Grieme; her brother-in-law, Erwin Grieme; and two infant grandchildren.
She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
Religious services for Esther Kessler were held Sunday, September 26, 2004, with Rev. Roger Maize officiating. Burial was in the Galva Township East Cemetery.
