James Mills
April 1, 1939 - August 4, 2004James Dean Mills, age 65, of Menlo Park, California, formerly of Linn Grove, died Wednesday, August 4, 2004, after a bicycling accident.
Jim was born on April 1, 1939, in Spencer, to John Vernon and Gwendolyn (Doyle) Mills. He graduated from Linn Grove Community School in 1957 and went on to complete engineering degrees at Iowa State University and M.I.T.
Jim worked for Digital Equipment Corporation during its formative years where he was responsible for much of the company's large computer systems and software development as well as for its European engineering organization. He worked for Digital for more than 25 years before retiring from Intel, which acquired Digital in 1998.
Throughout his life, Jim pursued many adventures and activities including rock climbing, hiking, gardening, sailing, skiing, amateur bicycle racing and French cooking.
A caring and thoughtful husband, Jim was especially devoted to his granddaughter. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Carolyn Carder; his daughters, Cate Mills, and her husband, Owen Brydon, and Monica Devroude, and her husband, Brad, all of Boise, Idaho; his sister, Mary Sundblad, of Sioux Rapids; and his granddaughter, Zoe Brydon.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jay Mills, of Arnolds Park.
Services for Dean were held on Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at the Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden in Palo Alto, California.
