Storm Lake, IowaEdwin Hibbs, age 90, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died April 29, 2011, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Edwin J. Hibbs was born June 22, 1920, to Leroy and Dorothy Hibbs in Chebanse, Illinois. As a youngster, he moved with his family to Sloan, Iowa, where he attended Sloan Consolidated Public School for eleven years. The family then moved to Albert City, Iowa, and he graduated from Albert City High School in 1940.
Following graduation, Ed and his brother, Morris, farmed until 1942 when he was drafted by the United States Army into the 5th Armored Division during World War II. Ed was shipped overseas in February of 1944 and landed in England where he continued his training until D-Day, June 6, 1944. He then took part in the invasion of France at Omaha Beach. On November 5th, Ed was wounded in the Huertgen Forest in Germany and spent eleven months in Army Hospitals before his honorably discharge in September of 1945.
On August 7, 1945, Ed married Fidelis Mernin at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. They were blessed with four children.
During his earlier years, Ed farmed in Albert City and Fonda. In 1961, he began a twenty-four year career with the Iowa Beef Processors. Before his retirement, he worked first as a Cattle Buyer and then as the Supervisor in Cattle Procurement. Ed enjoyed his coffee group and sports of all kinds.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of sixty-five years, Fidelis Hibbs, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Jerry Hibbs, and Gloria Hibbs, both of Storm Lake, Iowa; and his brother, Morris Hibbs, of Cairo, Missouri, as well as extended family and friends.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Dorothy Hibbs; a daughter, Jeanette Hibbs; a son, Jimmy Hibbs; a brother, Earl Hibbs; and a sister, Ruth.
Visitation: 3-8:00 p.m. May 02, 2011, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., May 03, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Vigil Service: 7:00 p.m. followed by a KC Rosary May 02, 2011, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
