Guy "Edgar" Fairchild, age 82, of Spirit Lake, passed away Friday, April 15, 2011, at his home in Spirit Lake. He was born on August 24, 1928, in Mobridge, South Dakota, to Guy Edgar and Bernice (Noble) Fairchild.
The family moved to Sioux Rapids when Edgar was in the fifth grade, and he graduated from Sioux Rapids High School in 1946 before going into farming with his father on the family farm.
In 1949, Edgar married Annette Fairchild. They farmed in the Sioux Rapids area, remaining on the same farm for fifty years. During this time, Edgar spent twenty seven years as a rural mail carrier. Upon his retirement, they made their home on East Lake Okoboji.
A member of the United Methodist Church, MUGS, CLAMP, and SALT, Edgar participated in many church activities. He enjoyed spending his spare time fishing, golfing, playing cards, biking, traveling, dancing, and especially having coffee time with friends. Most of all, however, he valued family time together and time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Edgar is survived by his wife, Annette Fairchild; his daughter, Janet Harmsen (Jim); his son, Ron Fairchild (Patty); three grandchildren; a step-grandson; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gorden; and two sisters-in-law, Roberta and Margaret.
A memorial service was held Monday, April 18, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake. The Schuchert Funeral Home in Spirit Lake was in charge of the arrangements.
