Richard A. Kestel, age 78, of Arnolds Park, passed away Friday, April 15, 2011, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake. He was born on April 21, 1932, in Storm Lake to Albert and Catherine (Grigsby) Kestel.
Richard graduated from St. Mary's High School in Storm Lake in 1950. He attended Creighton University for one year before enlisting in the United States Navy. Richard served his country for three years during the Korean War. When he returned home, he finished his education at Iowa State University in Civil Engineering.
Richard worked all of his life in the civil engineering field ending his career with Van Doren, Hazard, and Stallings in Plymouth, Minnesota, before retiring in 1997. He took great pride in serving the City of Minnetonka as a volunteer fireman over the years.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Jean Kestel, of Arnolds Park; two daughters, Barbi Jo Greenlaw, and her husband, Reggie, of Ames, and Jennifer Lynn Deist, and her husband, Bob, of Alton, Illinois; four grandchildren, Ryan Greenlaw, of Washington, DC, Bryna Greenlaw, of South Korea, Aaron Call (Nicole), of St. Louis and Bryan Call, of Ft. Worth, Texas; a sister, Phyllis Ann Fisher, and her husband, Paul, of Cedar Rapids; a sister-in-law, Lois Kestel, of Schaller; and and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Norman; and an infant son, Jonathon Richard.
A funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Milford. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Storm Lake at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday. The Schuchert Funeral Home is in charges of the arrangements.
