Lee Launderville, age 83, of Lakeside, Iowa, died February 24, 2011, at the Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.

Lee Francis Launderville was born in Vail, Iowa, on May 2, 1927, to Vincent and Marie (Rowan) Launderville. Lee was raised in the Vail, Iowa, area and attended St. Anne’s Catholic School. During his senior in high school, his family moved to Rockwell City, Iowa, where he graduated from high school on May 23, 1945.

After graduation, Lee enlisted in the Army/Air Force where he was a Staff Sergeant in the 1127th Military Police Company/Aviation Division. He was stationed in Japan during his tour of duty and was honorably discharged on June 26, 1947. During his years of service, Lee was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and Asiatic/Pacific Campaign Medal.

Lee married Maxine Madsen at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, on June 15, 1948. They moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, where he worked for Hygrade Food Products as the Plant Controller. In 1982, Lee accepted a position as a Senior Financial Analyst at Hygrade’s corporate office in Livonia, Michigan, where they lived until Lee retired in 1987. They, then, moved back to Storm Lake.

Lee and Maxine raised six children: Dennis, Dale, Kevin, Gary, Michelle, and Lori. Lee enjoyed attending his children’s baseball and basketball games, track meets, speech contests, musicals, and plays as well as helping them with such projects as their Pinewood Derby cars and science fair exhibits. Active in the athletic booster club, he was intrumental in getting the advertising wall in St. Mary’s gym started.

Lee remained very active with both the Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, holding the offices of Faithful Navigator and Treasurer. He also sang in the church choir and cantered at St. Mary’s for many years.

Lee passed away peacefully with his family at his side at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife Maxine Launderville; his children Dennis (Carleen) of Alta, Iowa, Fr. Dale Launderville O.S.B., of St. John’s Abbey, Collegeville, Minnesota, Kevin (Denise) Launderville, of Hudson, Iowa, Gary (Sandy) Launderville, of Alta, Iowa, Michelle (Roger) Nolan, of Southlake, Texas, and Lori Launderville, of Tampa, Florida; twenty grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren; one sister, Joan Reed, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews; cousins; and in-laws.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Marie Launderville; his brothers: Lyle Launderville, Wilfred “Dude” Launderville, and Louis Launderville; his sisters: Mary Helen Buckingham, Jean Woehler, and Anita Mummert. Lee will always be remembered as a kind and gentle man of strong faith, a good story teller, and a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Visitation: 4-8:00 p.m. February 27, 2011, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. February 28, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Vigil Service: 7:00 p.m. followed by a KC Rosary February 27, 2011, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
