December 25, 1921 - February 28, 2011

Duane O. Anderson, age 89, of Spencer, Iowa, and formerly of Albert City, Iowa, died Monday, February 28, 2011, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer.

Duane O. Anderson, the son of Howard and Marie (Schott) Anderson, was born on a farm near Storm Lake, Iowa, on December 25, 1921. At an early age, Duane moved with his family to Marathon, Iowa, where he lived his youth and received his education. He was a member of the 1941 Marathon graduating class.

Following graduation, on November 5, 1942, Duane entered the United States Army where he served his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged on January 9, 1946.

On June 25, 1948, Duane was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Wilner, of Albert City, in Jackson, Minnesota. This union was blessed with three children: Dennis, David, and Delores.

Duane was employed at the Hy-Grade plant in Storm Lake from 1948 until his retirement in 1982. Upon their retirement, Duane and Gwen moved to Spencer. Gwen died on February 2, 2006, and Duane continued to make his home in Spencer.

When Duane was younger, he enjoyed playing all types of sports, especially baseball, basketball, and football. When he could no longer play sports, he enjoyed watching the games on television. Throughout their lifetime, Duane and Gwen enjoyed spending weekends at their cabin at the Iowa Great Lakes.

Duane is lovingly remembered by his children: Dennis (Margaret) Anderson, of Lawton, Iowa, David Anderson, and his special friend, Peggy McBride, of Truesdale, Iowa, and Delores Anderson, of Fort Worth, Texas; his grandchildren: Benjamin Anderson, of South Korea, Rebecca Anderson, of Sioux City, Iowa, Michelle Anderson, of Lawton, Iowa, and Brandon Anderson, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and his great-granddaughter, Shelby Anderson; as well as other extended family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and brother, James Anderson.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 3, 2011, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert City. Burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
