Martin Aronson
June 13, 1924 - February 14, 2011

Martin Aronson, age 86, of Albert City, Iowa, died February 14, 2011, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City.

Martin R. Aronson, the son of Andrew and Elsa (Blomberg) Aronson, was born on the family farm near Albert City, Iowa, on June 13, 1924. Martin lived his youth in the Albert City vicinity and was a graduate of the Albert City High School. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army.

On March 4, 1951, Martin was united in marriage to Darlene (Cleveland) Stroup. They were blessed with six children: Dick, Alan, Tom, Julie, Larry, and Sandy.

From 1954 until 2006, Martin and Darlene were engaged in farming and raising livestock on their farm southeast of Albert City. In addition to farming, Martin also drove a school bus for 14 years. Martin’s garden was a passion of his life, and he enjoyed canning the produce from his garden. He was also a gifted cabinet maker and did beautiful woodwork. The people of the Albert City community benefited from his craftsman skills. He spent countless hours working in his shop and with his woodmizer sawing logs into lumber.

Martin will be remembered as a practical jokester noted for his witty sense of humor. He always enjoyed a good water fight, and he kept life exciting by igniting firecrackers and watching other people’s reactions. One of Martin’s favorite pastimes was playing cards, especially with his neighborhood 500 card club. Martin was very proud of his Swedish heritage and loved helping serve the Christmas Eve Dopp i grytan and Swedish dinner. His family will always remember their dad as a very thrifty and frugal man with a quick firm handshake and a twinkle in his eye.

A member of the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Albert City, Martin served on the Church Council and sang in the choir. When they were younger, he and Darlene partricipated in the Fellowship League. When Albert City celebrated its centennial, Martin won the “Longest Beard” contest.

Martin’s memory will always be celebrated and honored by his children: Dick and Sandy Aronson, Alan and Lori Aronson, Tom and Joni Aronson, Julie and Gary Hogrefe, Larry and Connie Aronson, and Sandy and Jeff Westcott, all of Albert City, Iowa; his grandchildren: Diane (Andrew) Twinamatsiko, Mike (Angela) Aronson, Andrea (Bill) Hoeft, Amanda (Elliot) Nielsen, Clayton (Megan) Aronson, Joe (Jessica) Aronson, Sara (Ben) Eldridge, Tony (Ashley) Hogrefe, Tim (Chelsea) Hogrefe, Patricia Hogrefe and fiancé, Mark Thompson, Andy (Lindsey) Aronson, Brian (Tiffany) Aronson, Kyle Aronson, Bradley Aronson, Elizabeth Garberding, Caleb Garberding, Michael Garberding, Tara (Adam) Northrop, Trista (Troy) Curnyn, and Jon Westcott; his great grandchildren, Johnathan Hoeft, Alex and Hope Aronson, Delaney, Avery, and Owen Nielsen, Camdyn and Brant Aronson, Kailyn and Kash Northrop, Bryant Garberding, Carter and Briley Dornath, Isabel Aronson, and Nora Garberding; two brothers, Oliver Aronson and Melvin (Mavis) Aronson, both of Albert City; two sisters, Lillian Schultz of Laurens, Iowa, and Olivia Cole, of Harbor, Washington; his sisters-in-law, Bernell Aronson, of Portland, Oregon, and Betty Aronson, of Seattle, Washington; as well as other extended family and many friends.
