Frank A. Meyer, age 89, of Marshalltown, Iowa, and formerly of Marathon, Iowa, died on Monday, February 14, 2011, at the Iowa Veterans Home at Marshalltown.

Frank Albert Meyer, the son of Albert and Ada (Zimmerman) Meyer, was born in Marathon, Iowa, on May 8th, 1921. They lived on the family farm three miles west of Marathon. He attended Marathon schools until he enlisted in the United States Army during World War II on October 9, 1942, and served in France. He was wounded and discharged on November 23, 1945.

While stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he met and married Violet Brown of St. James, Missouri. They resided in Marathon for approximately 65 years where they raised their three children, Jerry, Linda and Billy.

For over seventeen years Frank was a long haul semi truck driver. Best known for owning and operating the Meyer Brothers Garage in Marathon along with his brother Leo, they operated this garage from 1967 until his retirement. Frank also drove the Marathon school bus for many years.

Frank enjoyed reading, wood carving, collecting and shooting guns, gardening and spending time with his family and friends.

Frank is survived by his wife Violet, of Marshalltown, Iowa; his children, Jerry Meyer, of Des Moines, Linda Barish, and her husband ,Richard, of Cement City, Michigan, and Billy Meyer, and his wife, Eileen, of Centrailia, Illinois; his many grandchildren, Chad Meyer, David Meyer and Allison Meyer of Des Moines, Iowa, Jason Barish of Emeryville, California, Nicholas Barish, and his wife, Sarah, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Benjamin Meyer, and wife, Lisa, of Knoxville, Tennessee, Amy Gardner, and husband, Don, of Omaha, Nebraska, Barry Meyer, of Clinton Township, Michigan, Cindy Meyer, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Eric Meyer, of Centrailia, Illinois; his great-grandchildren, Shea and Toby Meyer, of Des Moines, Iowa, Benjamin and Madelyn Violet Barish, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Jacob, Josh and Jillian Gardner, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Xavier Royer, of Omaha, Nebraska, a former resident of Marathon; a sister, Iva Boothby, of Spencer, Iowa, and a sister-in-law, Nellie Meyer, of Sioux Rapids.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Leo, Don, George, Joseph; and two sisters, Myrtle Christensen, of Oregon, and Evelyn Brown, of Rolla, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent to: Iowa Veterans Home Hospice, 1301 Summit Street, Marshalltown, Iowa 50158.

Graveside services were conducted on Thursday, February 17, 2011, at the Poland Township Cemetery at Marathon, Iowa. Military Graveside rites were conducted by the Marathon America Legion Post.

The Sliefert Funeral Home of Albert City was in charge of the arrangements.
