Joyce M. Hollesen, age 82, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at the Sioux Care Center at Sioux Rapids.

Joyce M. Francis, the daughter of Carson and Rose (Martin) Francis, was born in Storm Lake, Iowa, on February 15, 1928. She lived her youth and received her education in Rembrandt, Iowa.

On February 16, 1946, Joyce was united in marriage to Harry Dean Hollesen at the Presbyterian parsonage in Jackson, Minnesota. This couple was blessed with two daughters, Cheryl and Jymme.

Joyce and Harry spent their married life in the Sioux Rapids community where Harry was employed first at Simonsen Iron Works and later at Nelson’s Products while Joyce was busy serving as a housekeeper, wallpaper hanger, and waitress. They were also custodians at the First State Bank in Sioux Rapids for 50 years. Harry died on April 15, 2003. The last year of her life, Joyce resided at the Sioux Care Center.

Joyce led a very active and interesting life. She instructed many young people in Junior League Bowling, and served as a volunteer at the Sioux Care Center for 20 years. In 2005, the Iowa Health Care Association honored her as their Volunteer of the Year. Joyce was a member of the Sioux Rapids Baptist Church and a 50 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

In her spare time, Joyce also enjoyed knitting, baking, doing craft work, and playing bingo. She and Harry treasured the times they could spend camping and fishing at Lost Island Lake. Joyce loved her grandchildren very dearly and enjoyed caring for them and supporting them in their activities with her presence.

Those left to cherish and celebrate Joyce’s life include her daughters and their husbands, Cheryl and Ed Wilson, of Harbor City, California, and Jymme and Paul Risvold, of Linn Grove, Iowa; four grandchildren, Barry Bell, Darla Chambers, and Travis and Trista Risvold; six great grandchildren, Emily and Sarah Bell, and Ian, Kaleigh, Zoe, and Phoebe Chambers; three sisters: Hazel Dunn and Fay Davis, of Loveland, Colorado, and Betty Godschalk, of Gatesville, Indiana; as well as other extended family and her many lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry; one brother, Lynn (Bud) Francis; and a sibling in infancy.
