P. Loraine Sundberg

June 5, 1923 - April 29, 2004

P. Loraine Sundberg, age 80, of Albert City, passed away Thursday afternoon, April 29, 2004, in Omaha after suffering several complications from a broken hip in March.

Loraine was born in rural Pocahontas, on June 5, 1923, to Carl and Ellen (Goode) Ekstrand. She was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Pomeroy, Iowa. Loraine attended a rural school near Pocahontas and graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1940.

After working at various jobs in and around Pocahontas and later in Des Moines, she attended North Park Bible Institute in Chicago and graduated from there in 1951. She was then employed at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver where she met her future husband, Jim Sundberg.

Jim and Loraine were married on September 13, 1952, at the Pomeroy Covenant Church. After their marriage, they moved to Minneapolis where they lived until Jim was sent overseas with the U.S. Air Force.

While Jim was in the Philippines, Loraine lived with her parents and was employed in Pocahontas. After Jim's discharge, they made their home and raised three children in Pocahontas before moving to Mason City in 1982. After losing her husband, Jim, in 1995, Loraine moved to Albert City to be closer to her family.

Loraine served in various ways in the Evangelical Covenant Church in the communities where she lived. Always a huge part of her life, the church gave her much joy and fulfillment in addition to serving an important social function.

Loraine had a lifelong passion for sewing and enjoyed doing alterations and other projects for family, friends and neighbors. She also took great delight in attending her granddaughters' activities throughout their school years.

Loraine and her Mason City Coffee Group met on a weekly basis to enjoy fellowship and storytelling with one another. More recently, she became a charter member of the Albert City Red Hatters where she found similar enjoyment.

Preceding Loraine in death were her husband, Jim; their parents; her sister, Harriet Omtvedt; her brother-in-law, Avery Shold; and her nephew, Danny Sundberg.

Loraine is survived by her daughter, Lu, and her husband, Jay Erlandson, of Albert City; her sons, David, and his wife, Marcia Sundberg, of Fort Dodge, and Paul Sundberg, of Bettendorf; her five granddaughters: Nichole and Kasey Krager, Kali and Alicia Erlandson, and Isabella Sundberg; and her two great-grandchildren: Caden and Taylor Krager, all who will deeply miss her. Also surviving are her sister, Eleanor Shold, of Albert City; her two brothers and their spouses: Web and Marian Ekstrand, of Pocahontas, and Fritz and Phyllis Ekstrand, of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; two brothers-in-law: Ted Omtvedt, of Pawnee, Oklahoma, and Myron (Bud) and his wife, Pat Sundberg, of Minneapolis, and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held Monday, May 3, 2004, at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City with Pastor Gavin Ellis officiating. Burial was at the Evangelical Covenant Cemetery in Pomeroy. A visitation was held Sunday, May 2, 2004, at the Sliefert ~ Asmus Funeral Home in Albert City, which was in charge of the arrangements.
