Gladwyn Langner
April 09, 1928 - February 02, 2011

Storm Lake, Iowa

Gladwyn Francis Langner, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died February 2, 2011, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.

Gladwyn was born on April 9, 1928, in Terril, Iowa, to Christian Daniel and Sophia (Dodge) Langner.

After attending school at Lincoln Lee in Rembrandt, Iowa, Gladwyn graduated from Hayes Consolidated School in 1945. He attended one quarter at Iowa State University and then began farming with his father.

On August 8, 1948, Gladwyn was united in marriage to Helen Sheffield in South Sioux City, Nebraska. This union was blessed with five sons: Michael, Mark, Merle, Marshall, and Morris. Gladwyn and Helen later opened their hearts and welcomed into their family Mary Joanne, who was born in Seoul, Korea.

Gladwyn and Helen farmed south of Storm Lake before retiring in 1984 and moving to Storm Lake. He and Helen were able to enjoy winters in Arizona until travel became too difficult for him. Gladwyn dealt with his Muscular Dystrophy with grace, never complaining and always presenting a cheerful attitude.

He enjoyed spending time playing cribbage and meeting at the HyVee for coffee with his friends. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church and, for over sixty years, a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows. He found joy in visits from his family and hearing about their activities. A loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Gladwyn will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish Gladwyn’s memory include his wife, Helen; his sons, Michael (Diane), Mark (Deborah), Merle (Barbara), and Marshall (Jane); his daughter, Mary Joanne; his grandchildren, Amy, Eric, Brian, Robert, Keri, Joseph, Jeffery (Lisa), Ashley, Jeremy (Becky), and Timothy Langner and Sara (Cory) Glover; his great-grandchildren, Courtney, Christopher, Corrine, and Matthew Langner, as well as Mykenzie, Landon, and Konner Glover. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, Pat Peterson, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Loretta Kendall, of Spencer, Iowa, and Shirley Langner, of Katy, Texas; the nieces and nephews of his extended family; and his many cherished friends.

Gladwyn was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Morris Langner; his grandson, William Langner; his sister, Ellen Beard; his brothers, Lowell, Clair, Ralph, Arnold and Wayne Langner; and Lowell’s wife, Eunice.

Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family.

Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m., February 12, 2011, at United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
