Marvin "Goldy" Goldsmith, age 95, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died January 30, 2011, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Marvin Richard Goldsmith was born December 30, 1915, to Lawrence and Rosanna (Gunderson) Goldsmith in Buena Vista County. He spent most of his entire life in Storm Lake, Iowa. After his mother died during the 1918 flu epidemic, he quickly learned the importance of hard work at a young age.

In April of 1942, Marvin entered the United States Army and served his country for three and a half years during World War II as a technician #4. He earned two bronze stars, five overseas bars, a no time lost lapel button, and a good conduct medal. He was also entitled to wear a European African Campaign ribbon. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945. In the years to come, he would cherish the many reunions he had with the men of the 601st Ordnance Battalion.

On June 27, 1948, Marvin married Florence Beyer at St. John's Lutheran Church in Galva, Iowa.

Marvin spent thirty-nine years working for the Kingan Company and Hygrade Foods before retiring in 1979. Upon retirement, he stayed busy by delivering products for BV Stationery in Storm Lake.

An active member at St. John's Lutheran Church, Marvin served as an usher, a trustee, and president of the Christian Fellowships Society.

He especially liked to go dancing at the Cobblestone and listen to the music of the Big Bands with his beloved wife. Marvin also would take in the beauty of nature by driving around the lake and by taking many walks through Sunset Park. Most drives around the lake included a stop at the Dairy Queen for a treat. Marvin also liked to travel and spent many winters in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Pharr, Texas. He enjoyed the many visits from his nieces and valued all of the special times with his family.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Florence; his brother-in-law, Earl Beyer, of Holstein, Iowa; his nieces and nephews: Barbara Bean, of Waynesville, North Carolina, Marvis (Merl) Yutzy, of St. Petersburg, Florida, Carol (Keith) Olsen, of Clearwater, Florida, Steven Hebron, of St. Petersburg, Florida, Harald (Jeanne) Freese, of Holstein, Iowa, Wayne (Karen) Freese, of Worthington, Minnesota, Paul (Deby) Freese, of Webster City, Iowa, Connie (Bob) Ogier, of Vinton, Iowa, and Jim (Jeanette) Beyer, of Independence, Iowa; as well as extended family and many friends.
