January 8, 1928 - December 19, 2003

Arthur R. Auen of Albert City passed away December 19, 2003, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell at the age of 75 years, 11 months and 12 days, following a battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).

Arthur Robert Auen was born January 8, 1928, at Herring, to Art and Ella (Rohde) Auen. He was baptized on January 29, 1928, by Pastor Schwidder and confirmed on June 21, 1942, both at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake. On May 9, 1945, Art graduated from Lake View High School.

Upon graduation, Art was inducted in the United States Army on April 10, 1946, at Fort Snelling in Minnesota where he served his country as a Technician Fifth Grade.

He was transferred to Hawaii and served as a General Clerk. Art was honorably discharged on May 7, 1947.

When he returned home, Art farmed with his dad for a number of years. On November 15, 1953, Art was united in marriage to Velma Frank at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake. This union was blessed with five children: Beverly, Marlene, Marilyn, Elaine, and Craig. Together, Art and Velma farmed in the Pocahontas area for 13 years.

They moved their family to the Albert City area and farmed there until 1980, and in 1985, Art and Velma moved into Albert City.

In 1982, Art attended an eighteen wheeler trucking school. For the next twenty years, he worked hard in the trucking business and retired in December of 2002.

Art was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Albert City. He also belonged to the American Legion Post No. 0588 in Varina. In his spare time, Art enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He found his greatest pleasure, however, behind the wheel of the big rig.

He was a wonderful husband, a loving father, a fantastic grandfather, and a caring neighbor. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Art is survived by his wife of 50 years, Velma Auen, of Albert City; his five children: Beverly Heuer, of Mason City, Marlene Kuhn, of Connersville, Indiana, Marilyn Ball, of Lewisville, Texas, Elaine and Robert Fisher, of Fort Dodge, and Craig Auen, of Albert City; his five grandchildren: Elizabeth Heuer, Matthew Kuhn and his fiancée, Sarah Acuncius, Michael Kuhn, Cory Fisher and Steven Fisher; two sisters: Betty (Mrs. Richard) Graber and Irene (Mrs. Dean) Goodlaxson; and many other loving relatives and friends.

Preceding Art in death were his parents, Art and Ella Auen; his brother, Marvin Auen, and his brother-in-law, Dean Goodlaxson.

A funeral service will be on Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Albert City with Reverend David Bernhardt officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The Sliefert ~ Asmus Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
