John "Jack" Hays, age 67, of Albert City, Iowa, and formerly of Carroll, Iowa, died November 30, 2010, in Des Moines, Iowa.

Jack Hays was born March 7, 1943, in Jefferson, Iowa, the son of Byron and Dorothy (Allstot) Hays. On August 9, 1969, he was baptized at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll, Iowa, where he was later confirmed.

Growing up, Jack attended school in Carroll, graduating from Carroll High School in 1961. He was a National Merit Scholarship Award Finalist. Following graduation, he attended the State College of Iowa (UNI) in Cedar Falls.

On February 7, 1963, Jack enlisted in the United States Army in Omaha, Nebraska, and served his country as a Military Police Officer during the Vietnam War until he was honorably discharged on February 4, 1966, at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.

On September 6, 1969, Jack was united in marriage to Eileen Kock at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll, Iowa. They were blessed with three children: Nathan, Jared and Clinton.

Jack was a Scout Master and a Merit Badge Counselor. He belonged to the Albert City American Legion and served as president of the Albert City Apartments Board. Since 1979, Jack had worked as a Buena Vista County Sheriff Deputy. After 35 years in the law enforcement, he retired in February of 1998.

Jack loved horseback riding, horse training and his Great Danes. He enjoyed remodeling his home and woodworking. He also liked reading and having coffee with friends. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, target shooting and camping with his young children. He treasured his family and especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Eileen Hays, of Albert City, Iowa; his children: Nathan (Marie) Hays, of Ames, Iowa, Jared (Donna) Hays, of Albert City, Iowa, and Clinton Hays, of Rio De Janiero, Brazil; his grandchildren: William, Pierina, and Alexander, all of Ames, Iowa; Samantha, Connor, and Austin all of Albert City, Iowa; his sister, Gene Lindgren of Albert City, Iowa; his sister-in-law, Sandy Haysm of Roundup, Montana; his nieces and nephews; as well as extended family and a host of friends.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jim; and his brother-in-law, Allen Lindgren.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., December 04, 2010, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina, Iowa
Vigil Service: 6:30 p.m. December 03, 2010, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina, Iowa
Interment: December 04, 2010, at the Wright Family Cemetery in rural Scranton, Iowa
