January 27, 1917 - October 12, 2003Donald Earnest Stephen Hansen, 86, of Alta, passed away suddenly on October 12, 2003, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake at the age of 86 years, 8 months, and 15 days.
The son of Hans Peter and Anna Christina (Henriksen) Hansen in Alta, Donald Hansen was born on January 27, 1917. He attended school in Alta.
On June 25, 1944, Donald was united in marriage to Lela Rose Lookingbill at the Presbyterian Church in Sulphur Springs. This union was blessed with three daughters, Victoria, Lynette, and Pam and four sons, Dan, Doug, Darrell, and Denton.
Following their marriage, the couple made their lifelong home in Alta. Donald worked for the Buena Vista County Road Maintenance out of Alta for thirty-five years, retiring in 1982. He enjoyed driving the road grader and meeting and helping farmers while maintaining the roads.
After retiring, he bought his first lawn tractor and for many years he did odd jobs including tilling, mowing, thatching, leaf catching, and snow removal. Donald enjoyed his hobby and spent many hours visiting with people throughout the town of Alta.
Donald is survived by three daughters, Victoria Hansen, of Washington, Lynette Haake, of Alta, and Pam Henderson, and her husband, John, of Alta; four sons, Dan, of Fort Dodge, (along with eight foreign exchange students: Nico, Andreas, Thomas, Ivo, Nils, Stefan, Zsab, and Felipe), Doug, and his wife, Pam, of Armstrong, Darrell, of Spencer, and Denton, and his wife, Melissa, of Alta; two sisters, Verna Stone, of Storm Lake, and Lorraine Warren, of Alta; five grandchildren, Jamie, Zachary, Thomas, Aaron, and Miranda; one great grandson, Josh; three step grandchildren, Jennifer, Danielle, and Chris; two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Wendlandt, of Spencer, and Love Hansen, of Alta; one brother-in-law, Glen Lookingbill, and his wife, Shirley, of Sun City West, Arizona; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lela Rose; one sister, Esther Spurlock; and one brother, Melvin Hansen.
Funeral Services for Donald Hansen were held on Wednesday, October 15, 2003, at the Church of Christ in Alta with Reverend Rick Bender officiating. Burial was in the Buena Vista Memorial Park in Storm Lake. Funeral arrangements were by the Barker Funeral Home in Alta.
