October 7, 1929 - November 12, 2003

Virgil D. Hutchinson, 74, of Newell, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at the Buena Vista Regional Hospital in Storm Lake.

Virgil was born on October 7, 1929, in Sac City, the son of Joe and Eva M. (Cheney) Hutchinson. He attended Sac City schools.

On November 16, 1946, Virgil was united in marriage to Charolette F. Nation in Cherokee. They were blessed with four children: Martha, James, Merlin, and Mary. They lived in Sac City until they built a new home north of Newell. Virgil was a member of the First Christian Church in Sac City.

Virgil was a superintendent for McCorkle Construction in Sac City and Gethmann Construction in Marshalltown, retiring in 1992. He was known for his great story telling ability and his facility with quarter horses. His fondest memories, however, were of driving stock cars as a young man when he qualified for the Daytona 500 in 1954.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; his son James; his six brothers, Eugene (Dutch), Paul, Billie Joe, Keith, Everett, and Dickie Joe; and his sister, Charlotte Moore.

Services for Virgil Hutchinson will be held on Saturday, November 15 at 2:00 p.m. at First Christian Church in Sac City with Rev. Sharla Hulsey officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Sac City. The Farber & Otteman Funeral Homes of Sac City are in charge of arrangements.
