Darvin M. Harth, age 83, of Alta, passed away on Tuesday, November 16, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Society of Newell.

Darvin Meseck Harth was born on June 16, 1927, in Storm Lake to Alfred and Marie (Meseck) Harth. He was baptized on July 17, 1927, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. He was confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Taunton, Minnesota, on May 17, 1942.

After high school, Darvin worked on a farm in Minnesota until he was called into military service on Nov. 30, 1950, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He served in the Korean War in Seoul, Korea, from May 1, 1951, to April 1, 1952, with the 24th Army Division. He was honorably discharged on August 30, 1952, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #6172 in Alta.

On Dec. 7, 1952, Darvin was united in marriage to Loraine Gerke of Newell at the Zion Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Janelle and Jerri.

Darvin worked on a farm west of Albert City for two years and then moved with his family to Alta in September of 1954 and worked in construction until his father was killed in a car accident. He then took over his father's shoe repair business and moved it to Alta. There he and his wife ran the Alta Shoe Shop until they retired and sold the business.

Darvin enjoyed all sports, especially fishing, and he made many fishing trips to Minnesota and one to Canada. He liked to watch his grandsons play sports and spent many days helping build the baseball, softball and concession stand complex in Alta.

After moving to Alta in September 1954, the family joined St. Paul's Lutheran Church. During his membership, Darvin held many offices and belonged to the LLL Men's Clubs. He also enjoyed playing with the men's dartball team.

Darvin moved to the Newell Good Samaritan Society on May 5, 2006, after learning that he had Alzheimer's disease.

Darvin is survived by his wife of 57 years, Loraine, of Alta; two daughters, Janelle (Rick) Hopkins, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Jerri (Russell) Boyle, of Alta; two grandsons, Adam (Melissa) Harth, of Alta, Brian Hopkins, of Kansas City, Missouri; two step-children, Joni Graves and John Boyle, both of Casselton, North Dakota; three great-grandsons, Austin and Skyler Harth, of Alta and Loggan Norwood, of Storm Lake; three step great-granddaughters, Katlyn, Navaeh and Micah of Casselton, North Dakota; a sister-in-law, Neoma Bartles, of Storm Lake, and sister and borther-in-law, Lorna and Willis Lussman, of Storm Lake.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Marie Harth; his parents-in-law, Henry and Irene Gerke; his brother-in-law, Eldo Bartels; and a step-granddaughter, Jennifer Boyle.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alta with the Rev. Craig A. Cummins officiating. Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery of Alta with full military honors conducted by the VFW Post #6172 of Alta. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
