Donald Cleveland Carl, age 91, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, November 11, 2010, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.
He was born August 24, 1919, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Charles Leo and Gertrude C. (Rodwell) Carl.
After graduating from Ottumwa High School in 1938, Don, then, continued his education at Iowa State University where he graduated in 1948 with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
On August 19, 1941, Don was united in marriage to Helen M. Lewis in Russell, Iowa. Helen later passed away. On November 6, 1999, Don was united in marriage to Frances “Franny” Demers at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake.
Don worked at a Sub-Station in 1948 and as a Superintendent for the Iowa Public Service Company. For 6 years, he was also employed at Buena Vista College as the Foreign Studies Coordinator.
A World War II Veteran, Don served in the United States Navy working in the Naval Research Laboratory. Recognizing his outstanding long term service as a Scout Leader of Troop #104, the Prairie Gold Council presented him with the Silver Beaver Award. Don was a member of the SERPACI Club, a 50 year member of the Jewel Lodge AF&AM, a longtime member of SCORE and the Hy-Noon Kiwanis Club where he set a record of 42 years of perfect attendance. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake.
Don loved to sail on Storm Lake. He enjoyed golfing, dancing and spending many winters in Arizona. Don loved his family and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Frances “Franny” Carl, of Storm Lake; his son, Charles L. (Judy) Carl, of Hernando, Florida; his daughter-in-law, Sue Voss, of Washington, DC; his grandson, Donald (Jeanie) Carl, of Oklahoma; his two great grandchildren, Charles and William Carl; his stepchildren: Randy (Judy) Demers, of Columbia, South Carolina, and Vicki (Ted) Rowsey, of Wichita, Kansas; seven step-grandchildren; thirteen step-great grandchildren; his sister, Thelma (Hubert) Owings, of Ottumwa, Iowa; his sisters-in-law: Wanda (Richard) Risback, of Chariton, Iowa, Louise (Frank) Thacker, of Colorado, Margaret Beeman, of Florida, and Lois Cerny, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, as well as extended family and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen; his son, Dr. James R. Carl (1-14-1995); an infant daughter, Susan (1952); and his sister, Isabel Stokes.
