Arlo Gilmore, age 97, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and formerly of Linn Grove, Iowa, died Thursday, November 11, 2010, at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids.

Arlo Sylvester Gilmore, the son of John and Pearl (Sylvester) Gilmore, was born in Spencer, Iowa, on March 18, 1913. He lived his youth and received his education at Rossie, Iowa, graduating from the Rossie High School.

On March 15, 1940, Arlo was united in marriage to Eleanor Olson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. This couple was blessed with three sons: Dick, Charles and Gary.

Aarlo and Eleanor spent the first years of their married life farming in the Rembrandt, Marathon, and Webb vicinities. In 1950, they moved to their farm home south of Rossie and resided there until Arlo entered the Sioux Care Center on March 30, 2006. Arlo was truly devoted to the land and his farming vocation. He remained totally committed to his passion for farming until his last breath.

Arlo was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Sioux Rapids. In earlier years, he had done some fishing, and he was also loved music. He especially enjoyed listening to Eleanor play the piano or organ for him.

Arlo will always hold a very special place in the hearts of his family members which include his wife of 70 years, Eleanor, of Sioux Rapids; his three sons and their wives: Dick and Connie Gilmore, of Linn Grove, Iowa, Charles and Toni Gilmore, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and Gary and Mel Gilmore, of Spencer, Iowa; his many grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as other extended family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dean; and three sisters: Thelma, Clara and Beulah.

The members of Arlo’s family would gratefully like to acknowledge the loving care Arlo received while he made his home at the Sioux Care Center. They also appreciate the friendship of the residents that he enjoyed so very much. Also, a very special thank you to Pastor Tonna Parsons and Pastor Michael Lopp for their kindness and comforting words during this time.
