Norman "Norm" Taylor
August 2, 1932 - August 21, 2010

Norman "Norm" Taylor, age 78, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, August 21, 2010, at his home.

Norman Lee Taylor, son of Thomas Franklin and Leila (Hancock) Taylor, was born in Lucas County, Iowa, on August 2, 1932. During his youth, Norm's family moved throughout Iowa, starting in southwest Iowa, eventually settling in Gilmore City. He graduated from Gilmore City High School in 1951. Following graduation, Norm worked various jobs until joining the U.S. Army where he served during peacetime in Japan.

On October 11, 1958, Norm was united in marriage to Susan Whittlesey in Gilmore City, Iowa. This union was blessed with two children: Darwin and Sandra. They made their home in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Over the years, Norm was an active member of the Storm Lake community. He served on the Storm Lake City Council for two terms during which he was able to travel to Taiwan. In addition, Norm served on the Upper Des Moines Board, the Storm Lake United Methodist Board, and the Buena Vista County 911 Board. He coached Little League for 25 years and graciously hosted their Neighborhood Watch gatherings.

After his retirement, Norm enjoyed gardening and watching sports on the television. He was extremely handy and kept busy fixing and remodeling many projects. He mowed lawns and removed snow for many friends and neighbors.

Norm’s memory will always be lovingly cherished and honored by his wife of 51 years, Susan, of Storm Lake; his children: Darwin (Jody) Taylor of Storm Lake and Sandra Taylor of Storm Lake; two grandchildren: Laura Ryherd of Galva, Iowa, and Adam Taylor of Storm Lake; three great grandchildren: Aubree, Emma and Wylie; twin sister, Norma (Wally) Hauck of Livermore, Iowa; two brothers: George (Jean) Taylor of Florida and Frank (Jane) Taylor of Brandon, South Dakota; two sisters: Frieda Sherrill of Sioux City, Iowa, and Barbara (Gary) Kannenberg of Junction City, Kansas; brother-in-law, Byron Whittlesey of Phoenix, Arizona; sister-in-law, Evelyn Peterson of Humboldt, Iowa; other extended family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Charles and Inez Whittlesey; two brothers-in-law: Al Sherrill and Knute Peterson; sister-in-law, Marietta Whittlesey; and nephew, Keith Taylor.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8:00 pm., Monday, August 23, 2010, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
