Donald Ray Holmes Sr., age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, August 22, 2010, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community.
Don was born March 12, 1921, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of John and Kizzie Holmes. Growing up, Don attended Alta High School where he graduated in 1938.
On December 4, 1940, Don was united in marriage to Marjorie Hansen at Immanuel Lutheran in Sioux City, Iowa. Together they farmed near Alta until Don enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in October, 1942. He was a 1st Lieutenant and flew B-29’s from the base in Saipan to targets in Japan until he was honorably discharged in January, 1946.
Following the service, Don and Marj farmed until they retired in 1983. They continued to live on their farm near Alta until 2004 when they moved to Lake Pointe Villa in Storm Lake.
Don was a member of the Alta VFW Post #6172. After retirement, they enjoyed traveling to see family members and other parts of the world.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 69 years, Marj, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Daphne (Dwayne) Hofschulte of North Pole, Alaska; Don Jr. (Janet) Holmes of Plankinton, South Dakota; Dwain (Lois) Holmes of Makuma, Ecuador; Dari Sunderland of Rochester, Minnesota; nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; one great - great grandson; extended family and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, John and Kizzie Holmes; son, Dennis Roger Holmes; sister, Lucile Wolterman; brother, Richard “Dick” A. Holmes; great granddaughter, Danielle Renae Holmes.
Memorial Service: 2:30 p.m. August 26, 2010, at Bethel Baptist Church in Newell, Iowa
Visitation: 4-7:00 p.m. August 25, 2010, at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa
