Delmar "Shorty" Phillip Clipperton
Sept. 22, 1935 - July 23, 2010Delmar "Shorty" Phillip, son of Wilbur and Elsie (Calder) Clipperton, was born September 22, 1935, at home on the farm in rural Churdan, Iowa. He attended country school and then worked for area farmers as well as in a gas station.
In 1959, Shorty was united in marriage with Betty Bosche at the Methodist Church in Carroll. They made their home in Manning and five children were born to this union.
Through the years Shorty worked for several major trucking companies as an over-the-road driver. He owned and operated his own semi-truck, and he and his son Dan were a two-man coast-to-coast driving team for a time. He worked for himself painting houses after retiring at age 62. During the 1980’s Shorty lived in Tennessee, and in 2000, he moved and made his home with his son Dan and his family in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Shorty enjoyed camping when his children were young, car races and watching classic television shows. In later years, he relished listening to the police scanner and visiting with his neighbors. Shorty will be remembered for his wicked sense of humor. He was especially close to his youngest granddaughter Bailey as they lived together most of her life.
Since before his retirement, Shorty had been struggling with declining health. He died suddenly at his home in Storm Lake on Friday, July 23, 2010, at the age of 74 years, 10 months and 1 day.
Shorty is preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Bethany Clipperton in infancy; Donna Pierce; and Dorothy Skol; and brothers Denny and Devere Clipperton.
