Don Cress - Mar. 22, 1922 - June 6, 2002

Monday, June 17, 2002

Don L. Cress, age 80, of Storm Lake died Friday, June 6, 2002, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

Don Lou Cress was born March 22, 1922, in Sac County, the son of Glen and Bessie (Cross) Cress. He attended Lincoln-Lee and Fairview Schools. He graduated from Fairview High School in 1940.

On June 16, 1946, Don was married to Eleanor Kent at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. The couple farmed near Nemaha for several months before moving to the farm north of Storm Lake in 1947 where they have continued to live.

Don enjoyed farming and raising hogs. But his most cherished pastime was fishing, and he was well-known for his expertise in angling. And, yes, most of his "fish stories" were true.

After retiring from farming in 1984, Don became an avid gardener. He also became famous for his homemade horseradish. He enjoyed spending time with his grandsons and going to garage sales.

His family includes his wife Eleanor, Storm Lake; his daughter Donna and her husband Denny Smith, Rembrandt; two grandsons: Brandon, Crystal Lake and Brent, Rembrandt, and his friend Sara Hawkins, Storm Lake; a sister-in-law Lois Cress Knudsen and her husband, Russell, Ruthven; a brother-in-law Floyd Gustafson, Storm Lake; two nephews: Brian Gustafson, Storm Lake, and Steve and Janelle Gustafson, Storm Lake, and one niece Jan and her husband Frank Klahs, Storm Lake.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Paul Don, in 1949; two sisters: Gwyneth Gutel and Wanda Gustafson and a twin brother Dean.

The funeral services were held on Wednesday at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Duane Queen officiating. Burial was in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery at Storm Lake.

The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements. A memorial fund has been established for Lakeside Presbyterian Church.
