Nell Elizabeth Henningsen, 85, of Geneseo, IL, formerly of Newell, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Good Samaritan Village in Geneseo.

Nell Newton was born April 13, 1917, in Newell, the daughter of Warren and Effie Rimmer Newton.

She attended grade school and high school in Newell, graduating as valedictorian of her class in 1934. She attended Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, for one year, then Iowa State for three years, specializing in nutrition and dietetics. She graduated in 1938.

She interned at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and worked for a time in the Women's Hospital in Detroit before returning to work at Cook County Hospital until she joined the U.S. Army as a dietitian in 1943.

She served as a second lieutenant in the 13th General Hospital in Australia and New Guinea.

She married Etlar A. Henningsen in St. Louis, Mo., on July 19, 1941. They were unable to live together until World War II ended.

She loved animals, growing flowers, traveling, and studying the Bible. She had a close relationship with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband, Etlar; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Allen Cooke, Danville, Ill., Mary and David Ward, Geneseo, Ill., and Beth and Dan Kallaus, St. Peter, Minn.; son and dauther-in-law, John and Lisa Henningsen, Port Byron; 10 grandchildren; and a special friend, Dorothy Heller of Geneseo.

Her parents, aunts, uncles, and several cousins, including special cousin Claudine Cline, preceded her in death.

Memorial Services for Nell E. Henningsen were held June 2, 2002, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Geneseo with Reverend Dr. Robert Bottoms and Reverend Thomas Heyd officiating. Inurnment was in the Newell Cemetery, Newell.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Research Center.
