Ada Abbie Espe, of Storm Lake, formerly of Alta, passed away on April 12, 2002, at the age of 99 years, 11 months, 22 days.
Ada Neinstedt Espe, daughter of Otto and Abbie (Higgins) Neinstedt, was born on April 20, 1902, in Maple Valley Township. After her mother's death in 1903, she was raised by an aunt, Jane Higgins. Ada remained in the Alta community, away from her father, her brother, and her four sisters, who all went to live in Dubuque.
She graduated from Alta High School in 1921 and continued her education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She then taught for six years in Buena Vista County.
On October 9, 1930, Ada was united in marriage to Harry A. Espe. The couple farmed north of Alta until the untimely death of Harry in 1968.
Ada continued to live on the farm until 1975 when she moved into Alta. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Alta and served as Financial Secretary for a number of years. She was also an active member in the Circles of her church, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Eastern Star, P.E.O. Chapter GB, the Chat-or-Bid Club, and the Alta Country Club. Ada entered the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake on May 3, 1995.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; her parents; four sisters, Pearl, Cora, Lottie, and Ethel; and one brother, John.
Ada is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Ada's love and devotion to her faith were evident to all whose paths touched hers. She was an influence for good on all who were privileged to know her for she had an abiding faith in the goodness of people.
Funeral Services for Ada Espe were held on Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church in Alta with Pastor Craig Lee officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Alta.
