Marjorie E. Edson, age 85, of Storm Lake, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake after a brief illness.
Marjorie was born March 19, 1917, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was the daughter of Dr. Fred and Frances (Farnum) Perrings. She graduated from high school and attended Washington University in St. Louis. She worked as an executive secretary for the Peabody-Cole Corporation.
On November 19, 1945, she married Wendell Truman Edson in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Storm Lake where Wendell resumed his law practice after serving 28 months overseas during WW II. Wendell died on June 19, 2001.
Marjorie was extremely active in her church, in the Storm Lake community, in social organizations and in the Republican Party. In 1959 she co-chaired the "Save the Lake Campaign," she was founder and past president of Chapter NL, PEO, and was one of the founding members of Penguins, a formal dance club in Storm Lake.
She was an excellent pianist and enjoyed membership in Melody Club, Art Club, and she was a member of '37 Club. She loved to play golf and served as a member of the women's board of both the Storm Lake Country Club and Lake Creek Country Club. Marjorie was an avid bridge player and she like cooking for and entertaining friends at her home on Vista Drive.
As a 51-year member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, she served as missionary education chairman for the Northwest Iowa Presbytery and as a sponsor of the Presbyterian Youth Club.
During her career in politics, Marjorie was named honorary colonel on the staffs of both Iowa Governors Norman Erbe and Leo Hoegh. She was co-finance chairman for the Iowa Republican Central Committee and was secretary to the Iowa delegation to the national convention in San Francisco in 1956. She enjoyed lunch at the White House with Mamie Eisenhower as one of five women from across the country that served on the Republican National Finance Committee. For several years, she sponsored the Buena Vista County Teenage Republicans.
Marjorie was a member of the Buena Vista County Welfare Board for 15 years and served as president of the Northwest Iowa Welfare Association.
Her family includes her daughter Wendy Cooke and her husband, Tom and their children, Geoffrey and Kathryn, all of St. Louis, Missouri, and a sister-in-law, Ruth Piper of Boulder, Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 12th, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with the Reverend Duane Queen officiating. A private family burial service will be held at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Lake Preservation Association of Storm Lake.
