John W. Jack Shelp, age 78, of Storm Lake, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake after a brief illness.
John W. Shelp was born July 13, 1923, in Auburn, the son of Forrest O. and Lettia (Fitzsimmons) Shelp. He attended Auburn public schools graduating in 1941 from Auburn High School. He continued his education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake where he graduated in 1950.
Jack was engaged in the construction business his entire life and had been a resident of Storm Lake since 1946.
On May 12, 1945, he married Jane E. Potter at New London, Connecticutt.
He was an active member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church where he was an elder. He was a past chairman of the Storm Lake Park Board. He loved watching all sports and was an avid fan of the Iowa State Cyclones. Jack served in the United States Navy Submarine Corps during World War II.
His family includes his wife, Jane, of Storm Lake; a son, Kevin Shelp, and his wife, Tina, and their children, Dallas, Danielle and John, of Nemaha; a daughter, Jerilyn Martin, and her husband, Steve, and their children, Joshua and Kaitlyn, of Altoona; two sisters, JoAnn Fell, of Lake City, and Jean Gayer, and her husband, Bill, of Omaha, NE; a brother Jay Shelp and his wife, Katherine of Sheldon; a son-in-law, Craig Fleener of Des Moines; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother, James, and by a daughter, Marla, in 1988.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 13th, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with the Reverend Duane Queen officiating. Burial with military honors by Amvets Post #66 will be in Storm Lake Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.
Visitation will be held at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home 300 Cayuga Street, Storm Lake, on Tuesday after 4 p.m. where the family will be present to greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
